Hemingway grandsons on visit to Cuba

Hemingway grandsons on visit to Cuba

Ernest Hemingway left his mark on Cuba — this marina in Havana is named after him — and now his descendents may be contributing to stronger US-Cuban ties.

Grandsons Patrick and John Hemingway are in Cuba for a week-long trip seeking ways to protect local fisheries.

Marking 60 years since his grandfather received the Nobel Prize for Literature, John Hemingway used the platform to speak out about the historically tense relations between the two countries.

“The Cold War is over. It’s time, in my opinion, for there to be a rapprochement as we would say – a coming together. Because we have a lot in common, I think.”

The trip is aimed at building ties between marine biologists from both countries, and maybe even providing wider access to Hemingway’s fishing logs at Cuba’s National Cultural Heritage Council.

“It’s an amazing culture. And I think, dearly hope, that eventually the differences between my country, the United States, and Cuba can be solved and we can go back to being friends again.”

On Monday, the delegation set sail from the Hemingway International Marina in Havana to Cojimar, where Hemingway’s yacht used to be docked.
