The first in DCTV’s extensive video collection on life in Cuba since 1974 to today, Cuba: The People, Part 1 reflects the warmth, unity and spirit of the Cuban people thirty years after Fidel Castro’s revolution. Using some of the first portable television equipment ever manufactured, the filmmakers travel all over the country, focusing their “port-a-pacs” on the daily lives of average, every-day Cubans. Issues related to human rights, freedom of the press, and religion are examined. The program presents an important historical record and details how the Cuban revolution was coping with the problems of housing, medical care, and education. It presents a counterpoint for comparison of the Cuban situation today.
This is not the official trailer for Coming Home but is the official teaser for the upcoming trailer and film. As the United States and Cuba move toward normal relations for the first time in more than 54 years, a remarkable documentary film profiles a unique collection of people who are pushing the boundaries and ‘Reinventing Cuba.”
The one hour documentary film, “Reinventing Cuba,” goes beyond the stereotypes – beyond cigars and salsa, beyond mojitos and Malecón, beyond antique American cars and decaying architecture to reveal an extraordinary nation eager to embrace change.
Correspondent Gerry Hadden – a long time Cuba watcher – takes viewers on a personal journey. He meets little league sluggers defying the odds and dreaming of the majors; doctors and medical researchers saving lives; hustlers finding ways around limited internet connections; artists and designers at the height of creativity; and black marketeers selling a vital entertainment and information device called “the package.”
Cut off from America by decades of hostility, living in conditions of scarcity and political restrictions, the Cubans emerge here as a people making something out of nothing with whatever is at hand.
Hadden portrays vibrant, hopeful, and resourceful characters facing enormous challenges in today’s Cuba. He reveals an often overlooked, burgeoning, middle class that is at the forefront of what will likely be Cuba’s future as it moves into a new era.
The documentary is directed by Humberto Duran; filmed by Amando Guerra and Josep Alfero. It is produced by the North American production center of China Central Television: CCTV America. Executive Producers are Ma Jing, Mei Yan and Guo Chun. Senior Consultant and adviser on the film: Jim Laurie Video Rating: / 5

Documentary “Voodoo Mysteries. The Iniciated”
In this film we witness the rite of initiation into Cuban black magic, Palo Monte, by members of the secret society Awuaka. The essential difference between santeria and El Palo, is that here they work with the dead instead of with the saints.
This religion is based on the prenda mayombe, the pots were they catch the dead in order to use them in rituals. If the offering has crosses, it is to do good, if it does not have any, it is for black magic. It will be covered with black cloths and will be called prenda judía (Jewish offering). They use sticks from different woods, stones, human bones, tools, coconuts and a dead man’s skull.
Jacinto, who is undergoing an initiation, is subjected to arduous tests. With his eyes blindfolded and without knowing which new trial he will be forced to undergo, he starts to get upset. No prospective member of the society knows in advance what will happen in the initiation ceremony. They only know that it is hard and that not all of them can endure it till the end. He soon feels faint. His knees are stiff and tremble with excitement. He needs a rest, the uncertainty makes him lose control of his nerves. His fellows encourage him, but they urge him to stand firm saying “This is a sacrifice, but you must suffer for the prenda”.
Once the initiation is over, the prendas mayombe must be fed. So a goat and two hens are sacrificed. Their blood will satisfy the appetite of the dead, who will help the newly-initiated member to follow the way of Palo Monte.

Cuba: The Forgotten Revolution tells the virtually unknown story of Cuban revolutionaries Frank País and Jose Antonio Echeverría.
Working largely independently from each other, these young men—a school teacher and architecture student, respectively—played critical roles in the eventual overthrow of dictator Fulgencio Batista, although their names seldom appear alongside their more famous contemporaries, Fidel Castro and Che Guevara.
Scholar Lillian Guerra explains: “It is as if we told the tale of the American Revolution as solely Washington’s story, leaving out Franklin, Jefferson, Adams and others.”
New scholarship and recently accessed footage challenge the prevailing view—in part manufactured and perpetuated by Che
Guevara—that Castro’s army of 200 guerrillas single-handedly defeated tens of thousands of Batista’s professional soldiers and liberated the people of Cuba. In fact, País and Echeverría’s
city-based insurgencies in Santiago and Havana held the key to generating popular support for undermining the authority of Batista and his secret police.
Both País and Echeverría rivaled Castro in popularity and power during the height of the Revolution yet neither man lived to see Batista defeated. País was gunned down in the street; Echeverría died in a daring raid on the palace. We will never know what Cuba
would have been like had they survived. This documentary highlights the complexities inherent in revolutions and examines the shaping and reshaping of the final historical record.
The film is narrated by Academy Award-winner Rita Moreno.
